Brian William Barry is Professor of Pharmaceutical Technology and Head of the Drug Delivery Group of The School of Pharmacy, University of Bradford, U.K. His education includes a BSc (Pharmacy) and a DSc (both obtained at the University of Manchester) together with a PhD from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of London. He is a Fellow of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain, a Chartered Chemist, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and a Fellow of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists. His previous experience includes employment as a Community Pharmacist (Boots the Chemist) and as an Industrial Pharmacist (with Parke Davis & Co, England). From 1962 to 1967 he was an Assistant Lecturer and Lecturer in the Department of Pharmaceutics, The School of Pharmacy, University of London. From 1967 to 1977 he was Senior Lecturer in Pharmaceutical Technology and then Reader in Pharmacy in the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology, The School of Pharmacy, Portsmouth Polytechnic. In 1974 he was Visiting Scientist at the Institute of Pharmaceutical Science, Syntex Research, Palo Alto, California, U.S.A. He is a past Chairman of the Postgraduate School of Studies in Pharmacy, Chairman of the Undergraduate School of Studies in Pharmacy and Chairman of the Board of Studies in Life Sciences. From 1991 to 1994 he was Dean of the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences, University of Bradford.

Professor Barry is an international authority on drug delivery systems, especially via the topical and transdermal routes, with some 400 publications. He served for four years as a member of the Chemistry, Pharmacy and Standards Sub-Committee of the Committee on Safety of Medicines. He acts as adviser on topical and transdermal delivery of drugs to the Medicines Control Agency of the UK and the Food and Drug Administration of the USA. Among others, he has refereed for the Science and Engineering Research Council, Medical Research Council, BBSRC, Wellcome Foundation, NATO, South African Government, Israeli Government and the Spanish Government. He has a wide and varied experience of collaborating with and acting as a consultant for some forty firms in the pharmaceutical industry in the UK, Europe, USA and Australia.
