Paul Thorning has more than 20 years experience working in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries in manufacturing, research, marketing, consultancy and senior executive roles.

After graduating in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Manchester Institute for Science and Technology, Paul joined ICI where he held a number of engineering and manufacturing positions, including commissioning of large production plants.

In 1992, after a period managing manufacturing-scale research and development facilities, he joined Zeneca Pharmaceuticals. He managed a team responsible for developing global packaging and devices for pharmaceutical products before moving into the international marketing team as a senior business analyst.

Paul was then appointed director of business and market research with AstraZeneca where he established a new team, and provided commercial leadership to in-licensing global pharmaceutical products.

Away from the pharmaceutical industry, Paul spent three years in Tanzania, Africa, where he led a team of 1,500 staff running hospitals, health programmes and community services for 140,000 Congolese refugees.

Paul joined the University of Bradford shortly before the opening of the Institute of Pharmaceutical Innovation in the autumn of 2003. In addition to his role as Director of the IPI he continues to provide lifecycle management consultancy to the pharmaceutical industry, as well as mentoring of entrepreneurs, he sits on the board of four start-up companies, is a member of the UK-China Joint Economic Trade Commission Healthcare Working Group, and is a non-executive Director of Medilink (Yorkshire and Humber).

Paul is married to Lisa, a doctor, with three children. He speaks English, French, Italian and Swahili, holds an MBA and professional membership of the Institute of Marketing, and is a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.
