Raman Spectroscopy
Heritage of UoB here re-Raman Spectroscopy
Raman Spectroscopy aids in the determination of the chemical structure of a sample and identifies the compounds present by measuring molecular vibrations. It is an excellent technique for qualitative analysis but can also be used for semi-quantitative and quantitative analysis. Its ability to provide a “chemical fingerprint” of a pharmaceutical compound makes it a powerful analytical tool for determining molecular composition and structure, identifying polymorphs and assessing other physico-chemical properties that are important for understanding predicting and controlling drug product performance.
Pharmaceutical Raman Imaging
Analytical scientists at the PI CIC have extensive knowledge and experience of using Raman
Spectroscopy to evaluate the physico-chemical properties of pharmaceutical materials. Using
Raman mapping techniques the PI CIC have previously studied
Differences in physical form in a pharmaceutical formulation crystalline vs amorphous
The distribution of one or more active ingredients in a tablet
Determined the particle size of one or more actives in a tablet
Raman Spectroscopy facilities
Renishaw InVia Raman Microscope (785/633nm laser excitation)
Bruker IFS FT-Raman (1064 nm)
Renishaw RIAS portable instrument with fibre optic probe
Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (NMR)
NMR spectroscopy at Bradford covers both solid and solution state
facilities. NMR provides information on chemical speciation, molecular
interactions, molecular structure in solution and material structure in the solid.
Bradford’s high fieldfacilities enable high resolution multinuclear studies with
low levels of analyte and complex mixtures.
Key areas of expertise include:
Cancer drug structure elucidation and drug-target evaluation
Biochemical speciation of protein, lipids and carbohydrates
Drug metabolite characterisation in biological matrices
Chemical reaction monitoring
Natural product structure elucidation including identification of drug
candidates
Solid state polymorph characterisation
