Tuesday 26th August, 2008 Upcoming IPI Seminar Series

All welcome to attend

All seminars will take place in Conference Room 2.11 of the IPI building at 2pm.

Wednesday 3rd September

Dr Ihtesham Ur Rehman of Queen Mary London will be giving a talk entitled, “Diagnosing Cancer with Spectroscopy”.

Dr. Rehman is Reader in Biomedical Materials at Materials Department/IRC in Biomedical Materials, Queen Mary, University of London and has been working in this field since 1987. His research work includes synthesis of polymers, formation of nano-bioceramics and impregnation of drugs in polymers for controlled drug delivery applications, and spectroscopic analysis of biological tissues.

His current research involves the use of Raman and FTIR spectroscopy techniques to characterise cancer tissues, cancer cell lines and compare these with natural tissue. This work is helping a great deal in understanding the chemical changes that occur in the cell during the formation of cancer and also these techniques have been employed to study the effect of chemotherapeutic drugs on cancer cells.

Wednesday 22nd October

Dr Graham Lappin, head of research and development at Xceleron, York will be giving a talk, “Accelerator Mass Spectrometry: An Unlikely Alliance Between Biomedicine and Archaeology”

The talk will consider the impact of a technique known as Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS), previously used primarily for archaeological radiocarbon dating, in the area of biopharmaceutics.
