Tuesday 11th May, 2010 Dr. Marcel de Matas chairs session at fourth pan-European conference on Quality by Design
The fourth pan-European conference on Quality by Design (QbD) and Process Analytical Technologies (PAT), was recently held (May 5th-May 6th) in Kuopio, Eastern Finland. The conference brought together academics and industrialists from across Europe to discuss the latest developments in the sciences underpinning process understanding and control of pharmaceutical products. The key note speaker was Professor Fernando Muzzio from Rutgers University, New Jersey, USA who gave a useful insight into the future challenges for academic scientists, pharmaceutical manufacturers and the regulators in introducing modern scientific and risk based principles into the design and manufacture of medicines. The first session chaired by Dr Marcel de Matas (IPI and Bradford School of Pharmacy), member of the organising committee and member of the steering team for the EUFEPS (European Federation for Pharmaceutical Sciences) QbD and PAT Sciences Network was focussed on PAT for biopharmaceutical products. Professor Robert Forbes (IPI and Bradford School of Pharmacy) gave an invited lecture on his experiences of developing a novel tool for monitoring the production of biological products in this session. Dr Wendy Hulse (IPI and Bradford School of Pharmacy) also presented a poster on this subject and was supported by a number of PhD students from the IPI group (Shahzeb Khan, Abrahem Benhadia and Mohammad Shariare) who also gave poster presentations at the event.
