Tuesday 6th April, 2010 Dr. Mahendra Patel becomes NICE Fellow
Pharmacist and university lecturer Mahendra Patel has become the first pharmacist to be awarded one of 10 inaugural fellowships by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence – NICE.
Dr Patel, who is senior lecturer in pharmacy practice, Division of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Science at the University of Huddersfield and an honorary research fellow at the Institute of Pharmaceutical Innovation at the University of Bradford, is also an ambassador for the NHS Evidence programme.
The pharmacist, who was also instrumental in developing NICE guidelines published last year on medicines adherence, joins nine other fellows who are all senior health professionals from across the NHS.
The fellowships last for three years, during which time their holders will be expected to promote the work of NICE as well as play their part in the development of policy, education and audit.
NICE has also announced details of its first 10 scholarships, which have been awarded to specialist registrars and health professionals for 12 months.
Director of clinical and public health at NICE Peter Littlejohns said: “Our appointees have been chosen for their dedication, foresight and experience in promoting clinically- and cost-effective practice in the NHS.
“While the fellowships and scholarships will provide them with opportunities to develop further in their own careers and improve the quality of healthcare in their local areas, we also hope that they will allow us to engage even more closely with the NHS and foster a growing network of individuals who are committed to promoting our core values.”
The fellowships and scholarship programme has been developed following a recommendation made in the next stage review carried out by Lord Darzi when he was health minister.
Lord Darzi, who holds the chair of surgery at Imperial College London also becomes the institute’s first honorary NICE fellow.
The appointments are all unpaid.
Wednesday 24th March, 2010 Healthcare Technology Future Scenarios workshop a great success
Future-proofing healthcare innovation today
Healthcare industrialists, clinicians and academics, spent the day evaluating tomorrow’s challenges at an all day event in Leeds on 9 March; identifying future challenges and opportunities for the industry and highlighting the need for high-level innovation.
The Healthcare Technology Future Scenarios workshop focussed on the key trends in the sector, with discussions on a wide range of topics, from drug delivery, health futures and personalised medicine, to telemedicine and regenerative medicine.
The event was led by the IPI as part of the Yorkshire Health Innovation Network (YHIN) – which is a new network designed to ‘future proof’ organisations in the region and is part of Solutions for Business, the Government’s package of publicly funded business support designed to help companies start and grow.
Taking place at the Thackray Medical Museum in Leeds on Tuesday the 9th of March, guests listened to motivational speeches from a number of key figures within UK healthcare, including Dr Adam Cairns, Chief Executive of Airedale NHS Trust and Jo Pisani, of the PriceWaterhouseCoopers Pharma 2020 team.
YHIN supports and creates new clinical, market and technology based opportunities, aligning today’s product development with future markets, and providing a rapid review process to guide companies through the innovation process; supporting their success over the forthcoming years.
Speaking at the event Dr Ian Revie, YHIN Director said: “The aim of our network is to establish Yorkshire and Humber as a leading global centre for innovation in the healthcare market, identifying high level partners, accessing global expertise, and in turn developing an innovative culture to drive the future of innovation.”
Dr Penny Wilson of the Technology Strategy Board who spoke at the event, said: “The workshop was invaluable in bringing together key individuals to allow businesses in the region to maximise their potential and build on their strengths. We had the fun day that we were promised and as the journey unfolds I’m certain that new opportunities will emerge for all concerned. I am looking forward to playing an active part in the network and to watching the region grow.”
