Staff from the IPI in collaboration with Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica (SIMM) and a number of leading Chinese Universities successfully delivered RCUK Summer School on ADVANCED TECHNIQUES FOR DRUG DELIVERY RESEARCH:
MOLECULAR-LEVEL CHARACTERISATION AND IN-SILICO METHODS in Shanghai last October/November 2008.

Overall the event was highly successful and surpassed our expectations. The overall objective was to share current knowledge, both conceptually and in the form of hands-on technical experience (material not normally detailed in publications), of the important techniques, both experimental and modelling which are underpinning current advances in pharmaceutical science. This objective was well achieved. Between the UK and Chinese speakers, various lectures and hands-on workshops were delivered and well received, covering a broad range of topics from molecular simulation, advanced analytical techniques, knowledge discovery with the view to optimising formulation design, novel drug delivery techniques, to manufacturing concerns and regulatory issues. These courses enabled students to make a link between these advanced techniques and concepts to their current research, as evidenced by the questions asked by the students and the discussion conducted between course lecturers and students during the summer school. Further uptake and utilisation of these concept and techniques will enhance fundamental research into drug delivery in academia and benefit the pharmaceutical industry. These lectures and workshops also provided a snapshot of current research in UK and China, which enabled students to develop an international outlook in their research. The summer school also encouraged students to enhance the quality of their research to an international level and to consider disseminating results more a widely. The Invited plenary lecturers were well known scientists in the UK and China and their excellent lectures inspired students towards high quality ambitious research and expose the students to eminent role models. During the summer school, students from UK and China interacted well with each other. We provided opportunity for students to give presentations as a mean of sharing research ideas and experience. A PhD student from Sheffield University gave an excellent presentation which was well received. She interacted very well with local Chinese students sharing experience on UK education system as well as culture issues. Her performance in the summer school largely encouraged participating Chinese students to consider studying/working in UK with less fear of cultural barrier. The summer school activities have certainly consolidated our on-going collaboration with SIMM. As a result, the process of establishing a joint computational lab between IPI and SIMM is accelerated. SIMM has also made a plan for a follow up visit to the IPI in March this year. We have also established links with a number of leading Universities including Fudan and Shanghai Jiaotong Universities with a view of establishing collaboration.
