Focus on China

In 2005 IPI senior management made the strategic decision to expand its activities into China. The rationale was simple: China is one of the fastest growing, yet in research terms least well served pharmaceutical markets in the world. China has enjoyed >20% growth for three consecutive years, and by 2009 is estimated to become the 7th largest in the world (IMS). The Chinese market is characterised by companies seeking to find ways of overcoming regulatory barriers to promoting Traditional Chinese Medicines (TCM) in global markets, generic companies looking to differentiate their products, as well as increasingly companies seeking to develop new chemical entities into global products.

Areas where the IPI is providing support in this market include:

  • Science exchange through collaborative research, PhD programmes e.g. Therapeutic Nanoparticles; In-silico Formulation; Quality by Design
  • Providing advice to Chinese companies on regulatory compliance, formulation design, manufacturing optimisation
  • Business development partnerships, where possible using scientists and facilities in China
  • Helping Chinese companies and entrepreneurs to exploit novel technology in global healthcare markets
  • Strategic research partnerships
  • Licensing and commercialisation of technology into Chinese markets
  • New joint venture companies

The IPI is proud to have recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Nankai University, Tianjin, China. The aim of this collaboration agreement is for both parties to co-operate in scientific research and play an important role in advancing pharmaceutical research within China and globally.

Current research and commercial collaborations in China include the following:

  • Partnership with Chinese National Academy of Nanotechnology and Engineering
  • Membership of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) research team, funded by Ministry of Science & Technology of China (partnership between IPI, Zhejiang Chinese Medicine University, Shanghai Institute of Material Medica, Jilin University).
  • Member of Cambridge based XiangCam TCM research Centre. Other research collaborators include: Tsinghua University (China), Cambridge University, London School of Pharmacy, XiangXue Pharmaceuticals (China), Brunel University, Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, Guy’s and St Thomas’s Medical Toxicology Unit (NHS), and the IPI
