Innovating tomorrow’s medicines. Article from “The Braduate” (2007)
The Institute of Pharmaceutical Innovation (IPI) is a research and commercialisation institute at the University of Bradford, opened by Lord Sainsbury in 2003. Research at the IPI aims to find novel ways to improve the performance of existing and new medicines.
Based on the “molecules to man” strategy established in the Bradford School of Pharmacy, the institute brings together international research in formulation science, particle design, computational pharmaceutics and drug delivery technology. The research group is led by Professor Peter York and currently comprises 8 Professors, 21 researchers and over 60 PhD students.
Innovation defines IPI’s way of operating as well as its science. Our aim is to ensure that ideas benefit society, and the institute has therefore embraced knowledge transfer in its many forms. The IPI has been externally accredited as a Centre of Industrial Collaboration (CIC), recognising the Institute’s strengths in solving formulation and analytical problems for industry, from small start-up companies to multinational corporations.
The IPI is actively involved in starting up new companies and in forming strategic alliances with companies to exploit their technology in healthcare. Two recent joint ventures have been set up; Lena Nanoceutics Ltd (a novel approach to producing submicron sized particles) and Pharma Ink Ltd (Inks for anti-counterfeiting and braille applications). The IPI also helps promising bioscience companies to grow through its business incubator facility.
The activity of the IPI is international in every sense, attracting staff, visiting researchers and students from all over the world. IPI clients and collaborators extend globally and institutions as far and wide as Finland, China, Turkey and Kuwait are looking to replicate the IPI model.
The Institute attracts support from a variety of sources including benefactors, funding councils, charities and companies as well as income from spin-out and licensing. All revenues generated are re-invested in research.
Key to the Institute’s growth and success has been the support of many former Bradford graduates, who have facilitated introductions, provided advice and acted as our ambassadors all around the world. We are grateful to you, and ask for your continued enthusiasm and support towards innovating tomorrow’s medicines.
